Buda Arboretum
Budapest, Hungary, Hungary
The Buda Arboretum (Budai Arboretum) is one of the richest and oldest arboretums in Hungary, located at the foot of Gellért Hill in Budapest between Villányi Street, Szüret Street, and Somlói Road, spanning about 7.5 to 8 hectares (nearly 19 acres).
Established in 1835 and with the first tree species planted there since 1893, it is operated by the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences (formerly Szent István University and Corvinus University) and is open to the public for free. The arboretum is home to nearly 2,000 trees, shrubs, bushes, and other plants, including 1,400 to 1,500 ligneous (woody) species, 240 bulbous flowers, and 300 perennials, making it a diverse botanical garden with plants from around the world.
It features everything a typical botanical garden has: various plant species, a small greenhouse (closed to the public), an edible plant section, a pond, and even a notable area called "The Hall of Hunting". The garden is particularly colorful and amazing in any season, offering beautiful views of Buda Castle from the grounds, and serves as a hidden gem just a 5-minute walk from Moricz Zsigmond Square, accessible by public transport (trams 61 and 59, or bus 27 from the square).
