Burg Alt-Eberstein
Baden-Baden, Germany, Germany
Burg Alt-Eberstein is a medieval castle ruin perched on a rocky spur at 489 meters above the Ebersteinburg district of Baden-Baden in Germany's Black Forest, first mentioned in 1197 as the ancestral seat of the Counts of Eberstein and built around 1100 with dramatic steep drops on all sides for natural defense. Visible from afar with its towering 18-meter bergfried tower and rugged walls emerging from the cliffs, it offers sweeping panoramic views over Baden-Baden, the Rhine Valley, Kraichgau, Murgtal, northern Black Forest heights, and even the Vosges mountains across the border. Abandoned by the 16th century after serving as a widow's seat and prison, locals quarried its stones until 19th-century preservation turned it into a free public site with a restaurant inside the ruins, accessible via hiking trails for a quick, rewarding visit blending history and scenery.
