Burg Alt-Lichtenstein
Lichtenstein, Germany, Germany
Burg Alt-Lichtenstein is the ruin of a medieval hill castle perched on a steep cliff edge at 800 meters elevation in the Swabian Jura near Lichtenstein, Germany.
Built between 1150 and 1200 by Gebhard von Lichtenstein, it served as a defensive stronghold overlooking the Echaz valley but faced repeated attacks, including destruction during the 1311 imperial civil war and again by Reutlingen citizens around 1377-1381, leading to its permanent abandonment by 1389.
Today, the remnants feature a 15.4-meter shield wall, rock-carved stairs, a preserved cistern, and a moat, accessible via short hikes from nearby Lichtenstein Castle parking for panoramic views amid the rugged landscape.
