Burg Altmannstein

Altmannstein, Germany, Germany

---

Burg Altmannstein is a medieval hilltop castle ruin overlooking the town of Altmannstein in Bavaria, Germany.

The castle’s origins date to the early 13th century, when it was built by Altmann II of Abensberg after the local Lords of Stein died out, and the town later took its name from him. Throughout the Middle Ages, the castle passed between several noble families and Bavarian rulers. It played an important regional role but suffered damage during conflicts, including destruction during the Thirty Years’ War in 1632–1633, after which it gradually became a ruin.

Today, visitors can explore the preserved remains, including a prominent round keep with thick stone walls, sections of fortifications, and the nearby “Hungerturm” tower. Owned by the municipality since 1991, Burg Altmannstein is a popular historical landmark that offers scenic views of the surrounding Altmühl Valley region.
