Burg Burgthann, also known as Burg Thann, is a medieval castle overlooking the Schwarzach Valley in Burgthann, Bavaria. It was built around 1160 by the noble Lords of Thann and served as an important fortified residence and later as an administrative center under the Hohenzollern rulers. The castle was damaged several times during wars, including conflicts in the 15th and 17th centuries, but was repeatedly rebuilt. After losing its administrative role in the late 18th century, it gradually fell into decline and parts of the complex were used as a source of building stone before preservation efforts began in the 20th century. Today, Burg Burgthann is one of the region’s best-known historic landmarks. Visitors can see substantial remains of the defensive walls, the impressive round keep, and other preserved structures that reflect the castle’s long and eventful history.
