Burg Dagestein
Vilseck, Germany, Germany
Burg Dagestein is one of the oldest landmarks in Vilseck, with origins dating back to the 11th or 12th century.
It was closely associated with the Prince-Bishopric of Bamberg and played an important role in the development of the town. Over the centuries, the castle was expanded, rebuilt after attacks and fires, and eventually transformed into a moated castle. The castle was plundered during regional conflicts in the early 16th century and later served mainly as a granary and prison rather than a noble residence.
Significant rebuilding took place around 1730, and parts of the complex changed ownership after secularization in the early 19th century. Today, Burg Dagestein is owned by the city of Vilseck and functions as a cultural and event venue. Its most notable feature is the Romanesque keep, whose lower levels date to around 1200 and offer impressive views over the town and surrounding countryside.
