Burg Hiltpoltstein

Hiltpoltstein, Germany, Germany

Burg Hiltpoltstein is a medieval hilltop castle located in the center of the market town of Hiltpoltstein in Upper Franconia, Bavaria.

Its origins date back to the 11th or 12th century, and it stands on a prominent dolomite rock formation overlooking the surrounding Franconian Switzerland landscape. Throughout its long history, the castle was associated with several noble families and regional rulers, serving both defensive and administrative functions.

While the core fortress is medieval, much of its present appearance comes from major rebuilding and expansion work carried out in the late 16th century and later centuries. Today, Burg Hiltpoltstein is one of the town’s most recognizable landmarks. Its well-preserved towers, historic buildings, and dramatic setting on a rocky summit reflect centuries of Franconian history and make it a striking feature of the local landscape.
