Burg Hohenerpfingen
Sonnenbühl, Germany, Germany
Burg Hohenerpfingen, also known as Schnatren, is the ruin of a high medieval hilltop castle perched on a rocky spur above Erpfingen in Sonnenbühl, Germany, in the Swabian Alb region.
Built in the late 12th or early 13th century likely by local Erpfingen nobility, it guarded the Erpf River valley entrance with a prominent shield wall, rock-hewn ditches, and a tower on an exposed 785-meter peak, but was abandoned by 1385 after brief use by the Lords of Salmendingen.
Today, the dramatic remnants offer hikers panoramic views via short trails from nearby parking, with 1985 restorations preserving its stark, weathered stone against the forested cliffs.
