First documented in 1242 as a fortified ministerial seat of the Archbishopric of Mainz, it featured a likely rectangular layout with a moat and palisade, serving administrative and defensive roles until abandonment by the late Middle Ages, leaving only subtle earthworks like ditches and ramparts detectable through archaeology.

Today, the overgrown site at approximately 240 meters elevation invites casual exploration on foot from Amöneburg's trails, blending quietly into the rural landscape overshadowed by the prominent Burg Amöneburg hilltop ruins nearby.
