Burg Kemnat is the ruin of a medieval hilltop castle located in the Großkemnat district of Kaufbeuren, Bavaria. Built around 1185 by Volkmar and Markward von Apfeltrang, it became the seat of the Lords of Kemnat and played an important role in regional politics during the High Middle Ages. The castle's most notable figure was Volkmar II of Kemnat, a trusted advisor to King Conrad IV and an influential nobleman of his time. Over the centuries, the castle passed through several noble families before being acquired by Kempten Abbey in 1551 and used as an administrative center. During the secularization of Bavaria, most of the castle buildings were demolished in 1804, leaving mainly the keep and parts of the defensive walls intact. The ruins offer visitors a glimpse into the region’s medieval past and remain one of the most significant historic landmarks in the Kaufbeuren area.
