Burg Lauenstein

Ludwigsstadt, Germany, Germany

---

Burg Lauenstein is a well-preserved medieval hilltop castle located above the village of Lauenstein near Ludwigsstadt in northern Bavaria.

With origins dating back to the 12th century, it is considered the northernmost castle in Bavaria and occupied an important strategic position near the historic border region between Franconia and Thuringia. Over the centuries, the castle was owned by several noble families, including the Counts of Orlamünde and the Hohenzollerns, and played a significant role in regional politics and defense.

Despite periods of conflict and changing ownership, much of the complex has survived and retains its medieval character. Today, Burg Lauenstein is a major cultural and historical attraction featuring restored halls, exhibitions, and guided tours. Its impressive architecture, commanding hilltop setting, and rich history make it one of the most notable castles in the Franconian Forest region.
