Burg Lichtenstein (Südburg) is part of the historic Burg Lichtenstein complex in Pfarrweisach, Bavaria. The castle originated in the Middle Ages and was first documented in 1232 as the seat of the Lords of Lichtenstein. Over time, the site developed into a large castle complex with multiple sections, including the still-inhabited Südburg and the neighboring ruined Nordburg. The Südburg was built during the 14th century and expanded after periods of conflict, including the German Peasants’ War. While the Nordburg gradually fell into ruin, the Südburg remained intact and continued to serve as a noble residence. Since the early 20th century, the property has been owned by the von Rotenhan family. Today, the Südburg can be viewed from the outside, while visitors can freely explore the adjacent castle ruins. Set on a ridge above the Weisach Valley, the site is one of the most impressive medieval castle complexes in northern Franconia and offers a fascinating glimpse into the region’s noble history and architecture.
