Burg Lohrbach
Mosbach, Germany, Germany
Burg Lohrbach, also called Wasserschloss Lohrbach (Lohrbach Water Castle), is a historic moated castle in Lohrbach, a district of Mosbach in the Neckar-Odenwald-Kreis district of Baden-Württemberg, Germany, with roots dating back to the 10th century.
The castle features rectangular foundations surrounded by water moats and consists of four connected wings forming a square complex, with its core fortress transformed over time into a three-winged palace while the main keep remains surrounded by its original water ditch. After coming into the possession of the Palatinate-Mosbach line, the village of Lohrbach also passed to this lineage, and in 1572 the castle was converted and rebuilt.
From 1576 to 1599, it served as a widow's residence for Electress Amalie, and today the castle is privately owned and cannot be toured internally. The property was discovered in 1982 by Klaus Weber in a completely abandoned and dilapidated state, and he and several friends began an ambitious restoration project that took more than two decades and required essential help from the State Office for Monument Preservation Baden-Württemberg.
The castle is nestled in a forested hilly landscape near the romantic Neckar Valley, about 6 kilometers from Mosbach's picturesque half-timbered old town, and now houses four buildings containing private apartments, three guest apartments accommodating up to 15 people, and seminar and practice rooms, all set within beautiful park and garden grounds.
