Burg Lupburg

Burg Lupburg is a medieval hilltop castle overlooking the market town of Lupburg in Bavaria.

It was likely built in the early 12th century by the noble Lords of Lupburg and is first documented in 1129. Over the centuries, the castle passed from the Lupburg family to the Bishopric of Regensburg, the Wittelsbach rulers, and later the Lords of Parsberg, serving as both a defensive fortress and an administrative center. The castle suffered significant damage during the Thirty Years’ War, when Swedish forces destroyed much of the complex around 1632.

Portions of the lower castle were rebuilt in the early 18th century, while other sections gradually fell into ruin. Today, Burg Lupburg combines historic ruins with restored buildings. Much of the ring wall remains intact, and the site has been carefully renovated. It now houses parts of the local municipal administration and serves as a cultural venue, while also offering visitors impressive views over the surrounding Upper Palatinate landscape.
