Burg Lützelhardt
Germany, Germany
Burg Lützelhardt is a medieval rock castle ruin perched at about 460 meters above sea level east of Seelbach in Germany's Black Forest Ortenaukreis, originally built around 1200 by the Zähringer family on three separate rock outcrops—likely connected by a palisade—to guard key trade routes like the Kinzigtal path and silver mining access. First mentioned in 1250, it changed hands through families like the Vögte von Wasselnheim and Fleckenstein before destruction in a 1235 feud by Count Walther von Geroldseck and later in the Thirty Years' War, with surviving elements including reconstructed romanische windows, a bergfried base, cistern, and main residential building offering panoramic valley views. Today, hikers reach the free-access site via steep stairs from below, where info panels detail its unique tri-burg layout—one of Baden-Württemberg's rarest—and blend of Romanesque to early Gothic styles amid forested trails.
