Burg Neidenstein
Neidenstein, Germany, Germany
Burg Neidenstein is a picturesque hillside castle perched on a rocky spur of the Galgenberg above the small municipality of Neidenstein in Baden‑Württemberg, between Heidelberg and Sinsheim, and it is the symbolic landmark of the town.
First mentioned in 1319 as an imperial fief of Friedrich von Venningen, it was the oldest seat of the Venningen family in the Kraichgau and has been owned by the same family for over 700 years, with its oldest parts dating to the 13th century. The castle was extensively expanded in the 16th century, gaining a lower outer bailey (Vorburg) with two Renaissance timber‑frame buildings—the “Jägerhaus” and “Herrenhaus” from 1538—a 25‑meter‑high bergfried (keep), an 11‑meter shield wall, an ornate bay window on the palas, and colorful wall paintings in the Knights’ Hall from 1516.
After the Venningen‑Neidenstein line died out in 1611, the castle fell into gradual decay until major restoration work began in 1897 and continued from 1960 onward, and today it remains partly inhabited by the noble family von Venningen, so the core castle can only be visited occasionally on special days or by prior arrangement.
In the outer bailey, the “Jägerhaus” has housed a local museum since 1994, featuring archaeological finds from Roman times, old tools, a classroom, and household items from village life, while the castle grounds are also used for cultural events and concerts.
