Burg Neunußberg

Viechtach, Germany, Germany

---

Burg Neunußberg is a medieval castle ruin located on a hill above the village of Neunußberg near Viechtach in the Bavarian Forest.

It was built between 1340 and 1350 by Konrad von Nußberg, whose noble family had long been one of the most influential in the region and moved there from the older nearby castle of Altnußberg. The castle played a role in regional conflicts during the 15th century, particularly the Böckler War, after which it passed into the control of the Wittelsbach rulers.

A lightning strike in 1564 caused severe damage, and the fortress was eventually abandoned and fell into ruin. Today, substantial remains of the castle, including parts of the residential tower, ring walls, and a historic chapel, can still be visited. The site is freely accessible, offers panoramic views over the Bavarian Forest, and hosts cultural events such as the popular Burgfestspiele Neunußberg historical theatre performances.
