Burg Neurandsberg
Rattenberg, Germany, Germany
Burg Neurandsberg is a medieval hilltop castle ruin overlooking the village of Neurandsberg in the municipality of Rattenberg, Bavaria.
It was built around 1330 by Friedrich Ramsperger and became the seat of a branch of the Ramsperger noble family, whose influence in the region dated back to the 12th century. The castle later came under Bavarian ducal control, passed through several noble owners, and even served for a time as a prison.
During the Thirty Years’ War, Swedish troops destroyed the fortress in 1633, and it was never rebuilt. Stones from the ruins were later used to construct the nearby pilgrimage church of Mariä Geburt. Today, substantial remains of the walls, gate area, and outer defensive structures can still be seen. The site is a protected historical monument and offers visitors a chance to explore medieval architecture while enjoying views of the surrounding Bavarian Forest landscape.
