Burg Oberhohenberg
Schömberg, Zollernalbkreis, Germany, Germany
Burg Oberhohenberg is the vanished medieval hilltop castle that stood on the 1,010‑meter‑high summit of the Oberhohenberg, the second‑highest mountain in the Swabian Jura and the highest in the Zollernalbkreis, near the Schömberg‑Schörzingen area in Baden‑Württemberg, Germany.
The fortress was built between about 1050 and 1100 by the local Grafen von Hohenberg, a branch of the Hohenberg‑Hohenzollern family, and later mentioned in 1179 as a substantial Höhenburg spanning roughly 77 meters in length and 40 meters in width, with a striking 30‑meter‑high octagonal tower.
The castle was completely destroyed in 1449 during a feud when Rottweil soldiers besieged, captured, and razed it, afterwards using the stone for other constructions. Today almost nothing of the original walls remains visible on the surface, but archaeologists have cleared the foundations and marked the outlines of the former bailey and keep, while the summit features a modern steel viewing platform, a suspension bridge replacing the old drawbridge, and a themed “Erlebnistreff Burg Oberhohenberg” that combines light reconstructions with a play area and the natural beauty of the high‑moor summit plateau.
