Burg Rothenfels
Rothenfels, Germany, Germany
Burg Rothenfels is a well-preserved medieval hilltop castle overlooking the town of Rothenfels and the Main River in Bavaria, Germany. Founded around 1148 by Markward II von Grumbach, it is one of the oldest castles in the region and played an important role in protecting and administering the surrounding territory. Over the centuries, the castle passed through the hands of several noble families and the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg. Although it later lost its military importance, the structure survived largely intact, preserving many of its historic features, including its imposing keep and defensive walls. Since 1919, Burg Rothenfels has served as a center for youth work, education, and cultural events. Today, it functions as a hostel and conference venue, welcoming visitors while maintaining its rich medieval character and offering impressive views over the Main Valley.
