Burg Rothenkirchen

---

Burg Rothenkirchen is the remains of a medieval castle located in the village of Rothenkirchen, part of Pressig in Upper Franconia, Bavaria.

The fortress was established around the late 12th century and played an important role in protecting local settlements and trade routes between Franconia and Thuringia. Over the centuries, the castle was owned by several noble families, including the von Haßlach and von Würtzburg families.

It suffered damage during the German Peasants’ War in 1525 and was heavily destroyed again during the Thirty Years’ War in 1633, leading to its gradual decline. Today, only the historic gatehouse and a few remnants of the original complex survive. Although much of the fortress has disappeared, Burg Rothenkirchen remains an important local landmark that reflects the medieval history of the Kronach region.
