Burg Stockenfels is a medieval castle ruin perched on a granite hill high above the Regen Valley near Nittenau in Bavaria.

Built around the mid-14th century, it occupied a strategic position overlooking important trade routes and served as the center of the local lordship of Stockenfels. The castle passed through the hands of numerous noble families, including the Wittelsbach dynasty, and was associated with both regional administration and periods of conflict.

During the Thirty Years’ War, the fortress was heavily damaged, and its administrative role was transferred to nearby Fischbach, leading to its gradual decline. Today, Burg Stockenfels is one of the most picturesque castle ruins in the Upper Palatinate. Extensive conservation work has preserved much of the site, and visitors can explore its remains while enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The castle is also famous for local legends and ghost stories that have become part of its enduring cultural appeal.
