Burg Thierstein

Thierstein, Bavaria, Germany, Germany

---

Burg Thierstein is a medieval castle ruin located on a hill spur above the village of Thierstein in Bavaria, Germany.

First mentioned in 1340, it was originally built by the Nothaft noble family as an administrative center for the imperial forests of the Egerland region. Over time, the castle came under the control of the Margraves of Meissen and later the Hohenzollern rulers of Nuremberg. It played an important defensive and administrative role, serving as a watchtower and gathering point for local militias.

However, it gradually lost its importance, was abandoned in the early 17th century, and was later heavily damaged by fire. Today, visitors can explore the impressive ruins, including the prominent keep and sections of the original walls. The site offers panoramic views of the surrounding Fichtel Mountains and is one of the most significant medieval landmarks in northeastern Bavaria.
