Burg Vohburg
Vohburg, Germany, Germany
Burg Vohburg is a medieval hilltop fortress overlooking the town of Vohburg an der Donau in Bavaria.
The site has been occupied since prehistoric times, and by the 11th century it had become the seat of the Counts of Rott-Vohburg and later an important stronghold of the powerful Diepoldinger noble family. After the extinction of its ruling dynasty, the castle passed to the Bavarian dukes, who used it as an administrative center.
Although it played an important political role during the Middle Ages, the fortress gradually declined and was repeatedly damaged, with its final destruction occurring during the Thirty Years’ War in 1641. Today, only parts of the original castle survive, including the historic gate area and sections of the fortifications.
