Burg Waischenfeld
Waischenfeld, Germany, Germany
Burg Waischenfeld is a medieval castle site perched on a rocky plateau above the town of Waischenfeld in Bavaria’s Franconian Switzerland region.
The castle was first documented in 1122 and was originally the seat of the noble Lords of Waischenfeld, making it one of the area's oldest fortifications. After passing through the hands of several noble families and later the Bishopric of Bamberg, the castle suffered severe damage during the Hussite Wars in 1430 and was ultimately destroyed during the Second Margrave War in 1553.
It was never fully rebuilt and gradually fell into ruin. Today, the most famous surviving feature is the “Steinerner Beutel” (Stone Bag), a distinctive round medieval tower that has become the symbol of Waischenfeld. The castle remains are a popular local landmark, offering visitors a glimpse into the region’s medieval history and impressive views over the Wiesent Valley.
