Burg Wallenrode
Geroldsgrüner Forst, Germany, Germany
Burg Wallenrode is the site of a medieval hill castle located in the forested area of Geroldsgrüner Forst in northern Bavaria.
It was built in the mid-13th century by Albert von Waldinrode and served as the ancestral seat of the noble von Wallenrode family, who were associated with the powerful House of Andechs-Merania. After the extinction of the Andechs-Meranian dynasty, the castle came under the control of the Bishopric of Bamberg.
Historical records indicate that it was destroyed sometime between 1325 and 1348, likely during regional conflicts over the Meranian inheritance, and it was never rebuilt. Today, Burg Wallenrode survives as an archaeological site rather than a standing castle. Visitors can still see earthworks, defensive ditches, and ramparts that mark the former fortress, offering insight into medieval military architecture and the region’s history.
