Burghalde
Kempten, Germany, Germany
Burghalde is a historic hill in the center of Kempten, Bavaria, and one of the city’s oldest settlement sites. It was first used by the Romans, who established a fortified settlement there, and later became the location of a medieval castle and defensive stronghold overlooking the Iller River. During the Middle Ages, the site was incorporated into Kempten’s fortifications and played an important military role. Much of the fortress was dismantled in 1705, but parts of the walls and towers survived, preserving evidence of its long history. Today, Burghalde is a popular cultural and recreational area with historic ruins, scenic viewpoints, gardens, and an open-air stage. It is also home to the Allgäu Castle Museum, where visitors can learn about the region’s castle heritage while enjoying panoramic views of Kempten and the surrounding Alps.
