Burgruine Bechthal
Germany, Germany
Burgruine Bechthal is a medieval castle ruin located near Raitenbuch in Bavaria, Germany. The castle was likely built in the 12th century and served as the ancestral seat of the Lords of Bechthal (Pechthal), a noble family connected to the Bishopric of Eichstätt. Over the centuries, the castle changed ownership several times before being acquired by the Prince-Bishopric of Eichstätt in the 16th century. After losing its strategic importance, it gradually declined and was ultimately destroyed by Swedish forces during the Thirty Years' War in 1633. Today, the site remains an impressive ruin overlooking the Anlauter Valley. Its best-preserved feature is a tall medieval keep, along with remnants of walls, ditches, and fortifications. The ruins are a popular destination for hikers and history enthusiasts exploring the Altmühltal region.
