Burgruine Bramberg
Burgpreppach, Germany, Germany
Burgruine Bramberg is a medieval castle ruin located near Burgpreppach in the Haßberge region of Bavaria, Germany. Built in the 11th century on the summit of the Bramberg, an extinct volcanic hill, it was originally established to protect an important route crossing the Haßberge mountains. The castle was first recorded in 1108 and became an important regional stronghold. The fortress was destroyed in 1168 by order of Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, allegedly because its occupants were disturbing regional peace, although political rivalry between local bishoprics also played a role. A new castle was later constructed on the site and served as an administrative center under the Prince-Bishops of Würzburg. It was damaged during the German Peasants' War in 1525 and abandoned by around 1560, after which it gradually fell into ruin. Today, the restored ruins are freely accessible and are a popular destination for visitors exploring the Haßberge Nature Park. The remaining walls, gate tower, and castle buildings offer insight into medieval history, while modern viewing platforms provide impressive panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
