Burgruine Eisenberg
Eisenberg, Germany, Germany
Burgruine Eisenberg is the impressive ruin of a medieval hilltop castle located in the municipality of Eisenberg in Bavaria’s Allgäu region. Built around 1315 by the noble Hohenegg family, the fortress occupied a commanding position on a mountain ridge and served as the center of their lordship. The castle later came under Austrian control and was owned by the Freyberg family. It was damaged during the German Peasants’ War in 1525, rebuilt, and ultimately abandoned after being deliberately burned in 1646 during the Thirty Years’ War to prevent it from falling into enemy hands. Today, the restored ruins are a popular destination known for their dramatic setting and panoramic views of the Bavarian Alps. Together with the nearby ruins of Hohenfreyberg Castle, Burg Eisenberg forms one of the most striking medieval castle landscapes in southern Germany.
