Verified Burgruine Flossenbürg

Flossenbürg, Germany, Germany

Burgruine Flossenbürg is the restored ruin of a medieval hilltop castle that stands on a striking granite peak above the town of Flossenbürg in Bavaria, Germany.

Founded around 1100 by Count Berengar of Sulzbach, it served as an important border fortress and was owned at various times by notable rulers, including Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, the Bavarian dukes, and the kings of Bohemia. The castle lost its strategic importance over time and was heavily damaged by fire during the Thirty Years’ War in 1634.

After centuries of decay, extensive archaeological excavations and restoration work began in the 1980s, preserving many of its surviving structures and revealing important details about medieval life at the site. Today, the ruin is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the Upper Palatinate Forest. Visitors can freely explore the remains of the castle and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape from its dramatic hilltop setting.
