Burgruine Granegg
Egesheim, Germany, Germany
Burgruine Granegg, also known as Michelstein‑Granegg, is a small medieval Felsenburg (rock castle) on the Schlossfelsen at about 921 meters above sea level just west of the village of Egesheim in the Tuttlingen district of Baden‑Württemberg, Germany.
The fortress was built in the 11th century under the name Michelstein by the local noble family of that name, later coming into the hands of the Ifflinger‑Granegg line and serving as a minor but strategically placed stronghold in the Bäratal valley.
Burg Michelstein was heavily damaged in the 14th century during conflicts with the Reichsstadt Rottweil and later passed through several noble and ecclesiastical owners, so that today only a few masonry fragments and parts of the outer wall and bergfried remain visible on the rocky spur, with the surrounding area primarily used as a scenic viewpoint and short hiking destination above the Bäratal and the town of Egesheim.
