Burgruine Hauenstein
Laufenburg, Germany, Germany
Burgruine Hauenstein is the preserved remnant of a once‑powerful medieval hilltop castle on a rocky spur about 330 meters above the Rhine near the district of Hauenstein in Laufenburg (Baden), in the extreme southwest of Baden‑Württemberg, Germany.
The fortress, first mentioned in 1108, served for centuries as an imperial fief and as the administrative center of the Waldvogtei in the historic Grafschaft Hauenstein, and from its elevated position it dominated the surrounding Rhine Valley and the approach to the nearby Hotzenwald.
The main castle was largely destroyed by a fire in 1503, rebuilt in the course of the Thirty Years’ War, and later used as a quarry for construction in the town, so that today only fragmented walls and foundations remain, set within a small, landscaped park that functions mainly as an open‑air viewpoint and local historical site rather than a fully restored castle complex.
