Burgruine Helfenberg
Ilsfeld, Germany, Germany
Burgruine Helfenberg is the ruin of a medieval hilltop castle near Ilsfeld in Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
Built around 1250 during the Staufer era, it was originally the seat of the Lords of Helfenberg, with the first known lord, Albertus de Helfenberg, recorded in 1259. After the Helfenberg family died out in the 14th century, the castle passed through several noble owners. It suffered damage during periods of conflict, including the Thirty Years’ War, and was later partly rebuilt.
Over time, however, much of the complex was dismantled, leaving only significant remnants of the original structure. Today, visitors can see the impressive remains of the residential tower and parts of the defensive wall. Surrounded by vineyards and offering views over the surrounding countryside, Burgruine Helfenberg is an evocative reminder of the region’s medieval past.
