Burgruine Helmishofen
Kaltental, Germany, Germany
Burgruine Helmishofen is the ruin of a medieval hilltop castle located near the village of Helmishofen in Kaltental, Bavaria.
Built in the 12th century by the Lords of Helmishofen, who served as local nobles under the Abbey of Kempten, the castle played an important defensive and administrative role in the region. The castle survived several attacks and disasters over the centuries, including unsuccessful Bavarian sieges, a major fire caused by a lightning strike in 1312, damage during the German Peasants' War, and destruction in the Thirty Years’ War.
After another fire in 1792, it was abandoned and gradually fell into ruin, with many of its stones reused in nearby buildings. Today, the site is best known for its restored tower, often called the “Römerturm,” although it has no connection to the Romans. Visitors can explore the remaining walls and tower, which offer insights into medieval castle life and views over the surrounding Allgäu countryside.
