Burgruine Hilpoltstein
Hilpoltstein, Germany, Germany
Burgruine Hilpoltstein is the impressive ruin of a medieval hilltop castle that stands on a sandstone outcrop above the town of Hilpoltstein in Bavaria, Germany. The site was first fortified in the early Middle Ages, and the castle itself was likely built around 1100, later becoming the seat of the influential Lords of Stein. The castle was expanded during the 13th century and remained an important regional stronghold for centuries. In the early 17th century, it was enlarged again as the residence of Countess Maria Dorothea of Palatinate-Neuburg. After her death in 1639, the castle was gradually abandoned and later used as a quarry, leaving it in ruins. Today, the restored ruins are one of Hilpoltstein’s main landmarks. Visitors can explore the surviving walls and tower, enjoy panoramic views over the town and surrounding countryside, and attend cultural events such as medieval festivals and open-air theater performances held within the historic setting.
