Burgruine in Burgthann
Germany, Germany
Burgruine Burgthann, also known as Burg Thann, is a medieval castle ruin located on a rocky spur above the Schwarzach Valley in Burgthann, Bavaria. Built in the 12th century by the Lords of Thann, it later became an important administrative center under the Burgraves of Nuremberg. The castle suffered significant damage during regional conflicts, including the Bavarian War in 1460 and the Thirty Years’ War in the 17th century, but was rebuilt several times. After losing its administrative role in the late 18th century, it gradually fell into decline and parts of it were used as a quarry. Today, the site remains one of the most distinctive landmarks in the region. Visitors can see well-preserved sections of the defensive walls, a striking 27-meter-high round keep, historic buildings, and local museums that showcase the castle’s long history and cultural importance.
