Burgruine Krögelstein

Hollfeld, Germany, Germany

---

Burgruine Krögelstein is the ruin of a medieval rock castle located above the village of Krögelstein, a district of Hollfeld in Bavaria’s Franconian Switzerland region.

The castle likely existed by the 12th century and was first officially recorded in 1328. It was originally associated with the noble Lords of Krögelstein before passing to the Bishopric of Bamberg. The castle played an important role in the region until 1523, when it was destroyed by the Swabian League. The attack was linked to the castle’s connection with the notorious robber knight Hans Thomas von Absberg.

After its destruction, the fortress was never rebuilt. Today, only a few remains of the castle survive, including a distinctive stone arch and sections built into the rocky outcrop. Together with the nearby church and dramatic rock formations, the ruins form one of the most picturesque historical landmarks in the Hollfeld area.
