Burgruine Leonrod is the impressive ruin of a medieval moated castle located near Dietenhofen in Bavaria. Built in the 13th century as the ancestral seat of the noble Lords of Leonrod, the castle was strategically positioned to protect an important route leading toward Nuremberg and served as a residence for the family for centuries. Unlike many castles of its era, Leonrod survived the Thirty Years’ War, but it was accidentally destroyed by fire in 1651 when vegetation around the moat was being cleared. The castle was never rebuilt, leaving behind the extensive ruins that can still be seen today. Today, visitors can explore substantial remains of the fortress, including parts of the defensive walls, a tall central tower, a historic chapel, and traces of the surrounding moat. The site is considered one of the most picturesque castle ruins in the Franconian region and offers a fascinating glimpse into medieval noble life.
