Burgruine Neuhewen
Engen, Germany, Germany
Burgruine Neuhewen is the remains of a medieval hilltop castle, also known locally as Stettener Schlößle, perched on the summit of the Neuhewen, a roughly 864‑meter‑high volcanic hill north of the village of Stetten in the town of Engen, Baden‑Württemberg, Germany.
The fortress was built in the middle of the 13th century by the Lords of Engen‑Hewen, later came under Habsburg, Hohenberg, and Reischach ownership, and was finally destroyed by Bavarian troops in 1639 during the Thirty Years’ War.
Today the site preserves the stump of a sturdy, roughly eleven‑meter‑high square tower made of buckelquaders, fragments of the surrounding ring wall, and traces of a former ditch separating the main castle from a long, shield‑shaped outer ward, but the ruins are now fenced off for safety and not open to entry, accessible only by forest paths that still reward hikers with views over the Hegau region.
