Burgruine Rabenstein

Riedenburg, Germany, Germany

---

Burgruine Rabenstein is the oldest of Riedenburg’s three castle sites, situated on a steep hillside above the town and the Altmühl Valley.

The castle was probably built in the early 12th century by the Burgraves of Regensburg and served as a medieval noble residence with both an upper and lower castle complex. By around 1400, the castle had disappeared from records as an active seat of power, and it was ultimately destroyed in the 16th century.

Over time, the structure fell into ruin, leaving only fragments of its former defenses and residential buildings. Today, visitors can freely explore the site and enjoy panoramic views over Riedenburg and the surrounding Altmühl Valley. Surviving remains include sections of the residential tower and parts of the stone ring wall, making the ruin a fascinating stop along the town’s popular Three Castles Trail.
