Burgruine Reichenau
Reichenau im Mühlkreis, Austria, Germany
Burgruine Reichenau is a medieval hill castle ruin perched at 730 meters above the market town of Reichenau im Mühlkreis in Austria's Mühlviertel region of Upper Austria.
Built around 1315 by Walther von Marschalich as a stronghold for the Passau bishops, it passed through noble families like the Walsee and Marschalich before the Starhembergs acquired it in 1630, converting it into a hunting lodge and later a palace after a 1750 fire.
Neglected since the 1930s, partial 1960s renovations preserved its ring wall, hollow bergfried, and inner courtyard now used as an open-air theater for summer Burgfestspiele performances, reachable via hiking trail 60.
