Burgruine Rotenhan is a remarkable medieval castle ruin located near Ebern in Bavaria’s Haßberge region. First mentioned in the late 12th century, it was the ancestral seat of the noble Rotenhan family and is especially notable as one of the few true rock-cut castles in Germany, with many of its rooms, stairways, and defensive features carved directly into the sandstone bedrock. The castle was besieged and destroyed in 1323 by the Prince-Bishop of Würzburg. Although the Rotenhan family regained ownership shortly afterward, a treaty prohibited the castle from ever being rebuilt, leaving it as a ruin ever since. Today, visitors can freely explore the atmospheric remains, including the carved rock structures and defensive works. The site is considered one of Bavaria’s most important geological and historical landmarks, offering both a fascinating glimpse into medieval history and beautiful views of the surrounding countryside.
