Burgruine Rötteln
Lörrach, Germany, Germany
Burgruine Rötteln is a large and impressive medieval castle ruin perched on a 422‑meter‑high forested hill above the Lörrach suburb of Haagen in the extreme southwest of Baden‑Württemberg, near the borders with Switzerland and France.
Built from the 11th century onward, it was repeatedly expanded into one of the most powerful fortresses in southwest Germany, serving as a major stronghold for the Margraves of Hachberg‑Sausenberg before being damaged in later wars and finally falling into ruin.
Today it is among the biggest and most striking castle ruins in the region, with well‑preserved walls, courtyards, a deep well, and two towers that visitors can climb, plus a small museum, café, and Biergarten, all set within a scenic landscape park that offers expansive views over Lörrach, the Rhine Plain, and the Alps.
