Burgruine Schellenberg (Oberpfalz)

Georgenberg, Neustadt, Germany, Germany

---

Burgruine Schellenberg is a medieval castle ruin located on the wooded summit of Schellenberg near Georgenberg in Bavaria, Germany.

The castle was founded in 1347, likely by the Lords of Waldau, and originally served as a border fortress overlooking routes near Bohemia. It was once known as “Lug ins Land” because of its commanding views over the surrounding landscape. The castle was captured and largely destroyed in 1498 during a regional feud led by forces under Konrad von Wirsberg.

Although the ruins later changed ownership multiple times, the fortress was never rebuilt and gradually fell into decay. Today, Burgruine Schellenberg is a restored and freely accessible historic site as well as a popular viewpoint. Situated at about 826 meters above sea level, it offers impressive views across the Upper Palatinate Forest and is surrounded by striking granite rock formations that add to its scenic appeal.
