Burgruine Schiltach
Schiltach, Germany, Germany
Burgruine Schiltach, also known as Burg Schiltach or Hohe Landesehr, is a medieval castle ruin perched at 420 meters above the town of Schiltach in Germany's Black Forest, built before 1250 by the Dukes of Teck to defend and administer the Schiltach Valley alongside nearby fortresses. Passed through the Urslingen family and sold to the Counts of Württemberg in 1381, it served as a military outpost until becoming dilapidated from troop housing, leading to partial dismantling starting in 1749, further stone removal after the 1791 town fire, and final reduction to foundations by 1830. Today, visitors reach the site via a scenic wooden bridge over the former moat—once spanned by a drawbridge—where benches amid the southern wall remnants offer panoramic views of Schiltach's historic timber-framed Altstadt below.
