Burgruine Schwarzenburg

Rötz, Germany, Germany

---

Burgruine Schwarzenburg is the impressive remains of a medieval hilltop castle located above Rötz in Bavaria.

The castle was founded in the 11th century and became an important stronghold for regional noble families. Over the centuries, it was expanded and strengthened, especially during the 15th century when new defensive structures were added to protect against emerging military threats. The castle changed ownership several times throughout its history and played a role in regional conflicts, including the Hussite Wars.

It was ultimately destroyed by Swedish forces during the Thirty Years’ War in 1634 and was later used as a quarry, which accelerated its decline. Today, the ruins are freely accessible and rank among the most significant castle sites in the Upper Palatinate. Visitors can explore extensive walls, bastions, the castle chapel area, and a preserved keep that serves as a lookout tower with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
