Burgruine Stauf is the ruin of a medieval hilltop castle located above the village of Stauf, part of Thalmässing in Bavaria, Germany. Built in the early 13th century on a prominent hill rising about 535 meters above sea level, the castle occupied a strategic position on the European watershed and served as the seat of the Lords of Stauf. The castle experienced a turbulent history, being destroyed, rebuilt, and abandoned several times. It was damaged during conflicts involving Emperor Henry VII in the early 14th century and later rebuilt, only to be destroyed again in 1460 during a war between Bavarian and Franconian rulers. After that, it remained a ruin. Today, Burgruine Stauf is a notable historical landmark and viewpoint overlooking the surrounding countryside. The site preserves traces of its medieval fortifications and offers visitors insight into the region’s long history, which stretches back to prehistoric settlement on the same hill.
