Burgruine Steinegg
Bonndorf, Germany, Germany
Burgruine Steinegg is the ruin of a medieval hill castle located near Wittlekofen, a district of Bonndorf im Schwarzwald in Baden‑Württemberg, Germany.
It sits on a roughly 720‑meter‑high ridge about 400 meters from the nearby castle ruins of Roggenbach, forming part of a small, paired castle group known collectively as the Roggenbacher Schlösser. The castle was built in the 12th century by the local lords of Steinegg, vassals of the Zähringen dukes, and later passed to the Counts of Nellenburg before changing hands several times.
It was destroyed in 1525 during the German Peasants’ War, along with Burg Roggenbach, and today only fragmentary remains survive, including the base of the tower (Bergfried), remnants of a thick wall, and a deep neck ditch. The site now serves mainly as a quiet hiking destination in the Black Forest, offering views and a glimpse into the region’s medieval defensive architecture.
