Burgruine Waldstein
Zell, Germany, Germany
Burgruine Waldstein, also known as Waldsteinburg or the “Red Castle,” is a medieval castle ruin located on the summit of the Großer Waldstein mountain near Zell im Fichtelgebirge in Bavaria, Germany.
First mentioned in 1350, it was built by the noble von Sparneck family as a replacement for an older fortress and served as an important stronghold in the Fichtel Mountains. The castle gained regional significance during the Middle Ages but was destroyed in 1523 by forces of the Swabian League following conflicts involving local nobles.
It was never fully rebuilt, leaving the impressive ruins that remain today. Today, the ruins are a popular destination for hikers and history enthusiasts.
